Mike - Google Certified Data Engineer

The Architect of Business Value

Google Certified Data Engineer & Financial Industry Veteran

For over a decade, I have operated at the intersection of high-stakes finance and enterprise technology. I am not just a developer; I am a business graduate specializing in accounting who learned to code out of necessity—to solve real-world data problems faster and more accurately. Today, I build robust, scalable Google Cloud data platforms that turn complex data into actionable business insights.

From the General Ledger to the Command Line

My career began in the financial industry, armed with a Business degree and a specialization in Accounting. I understood ledgers, reconciliation, and the critical importance of data accuracy. Frustrated by manual processes, I started building automation tools using the Microsoft Suite—pushing Excel, Access, and VBA to their absolute limits to streamline reporting for my departments.

Scaling Up: Enterprise Data Management

As data volumes grew, desktop tools weren't enough. I spent several years managing mission-critical financial reports within complex enterprise infrastructures using SAS, orchestrating complex cron jobs on servers to ensure timely delivery. This period honed my skills in handling large datasets outside of a graphical interface in demanding corporate environments.

Cloud-Native Engineering & Technical Navigation

The shift to the cloud was a natural evolution. I transitioned into full-time Data Engineering, specializing in Google Cloud Platform. Today, I act as a technical navigator for organizations, guiding them from legacy on-premise systems to modern cloud architectures. I design end-to-end solutions, from interactive Power BI dashboards to secure, serverless ingestion pipelines using Terraform and modern Dev/Ops practices.

Engineering Philosophy: Code as a Craft

I don't just write code that works; I strive to write code that lasts. I study programming as a craft, deeply influenced by foundational texts like The Pragmatic Programmer and Robert C. Martin's Clean Code.

This means I prioritize readability, maintainability, and robust error handling. A pipeline isn't finished until it's secure, documented, and resilient enough to handle the unexpected long after I've handed it off.

Global Methodology & Adaptability

My experience spans diverse corporate cultures across Canada, the US, and Latin America. I am equally comfortable operating in traditional Waterfall enterprise environments as I am leading modern Agile Sprint teams or continuous Kanban workflows.

I believe processes should serve the goal, not the other way around. I adapt my approach to suit the specific client situation and organizational maturity, ensuring transparency and continuous delivery of value without unnecessary overhead.
